Governors State University President Receives Leadership Award from ATHENA International


University Park, Ill.—(ENEWSPF)–April 23, 2014 – Governors State University president Elaine P. Maimon has been awarded the 2014 Chicagoland ATHENA Leadership Award from ATHENA International. President Maimon will receive her award at the 2014 Governors State University Foundation Scholarship Luncheon April 25.

The ATHENA Leadership Award® is presented to a woman or man who is honored for professional excellence, community service and for actively assisting women in their attainment of professional excellence and leadership skills.

“Elaine Maimon represents the kind of woman we believe sets the standard for all women with regard to living their best life, achieving their full potential and sharing their gifts with other women along the way,” said KL Robertson Daly of the ATHENA International Board of Directors. “She embodies the ATHENA mission of inspiring women to achieve their full potential and creating balance in leadership worldwide.”   

“I am deeply honored to be the recipient of the 2014 Chicagoland ATHENA Leadership Award,” Maimon said. “I have long admired ATHENA International and their advocacy for broad-based collaboration and giving back to the community. As President of Governors State University, I am committed to promoting these values.”

The GSU Scholarship Luncheon is the university’s annual stakeholder event celebrating and acknowledging the achievements of GSU student scholarship recipients.  The luncheon honors the philanthropic support of corporate, private, alumni and community partners, who make higher education attainable for our students.  The luncheon also provides an opportunity to connect recipients with their donors to personally express their appreciation for the rich opportunities and experiences made possible thanks to their financial support. 

This year’s luncheon is emceed by NBC 5’s Art Norman and sponsored by Com Ed and First Midwest Bank. 

Since the program’s inception in 1982, more than 6,500 exemplary leaders in over 500 communities have received the prestigious ATHENA Award in the United States, Bermuda, Canada, China, Greece, India, Russia, Unite Arab Emirates and United Kingdom. By honoring exceptional leaders, the ATHENA Leadership Award® Program seeks to inspire others to achieve excellence in their professional and personal lives.

“Elaine has been instrumental both in supporting in critical ways women in senior leadership positions in higher education and in helping cultivate the next generation of women leaders,” said Kate Bensen, president and CEO of The Chicago Network, an organization that connects women leaders in Chicago. “Elaine truly believes that a rising tide raises all boats and that more women in academia achieving success is win-win for institutions, faculty and students alike.”

The ATHENA Leadership Award® is presented annually by chambers of commerce, women’s organizations and universities. The award is established through local host organizations in partnership with ATHENA International’s national underwriters, local businesses and individual sponsors.
