Marian Catholic: Accelerated Weekend Experience For Learners That Excel

Northwestern University

Sound Lab and Veterinary Science Marian Catholic High School October 19-20, 2013

Chicago Heights, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Marian Catholic High School is offering a unique learning opportunity for academically talented students in grades 5 through 8. In collaboration with Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development, The Accelerated Weekend Experience (AWE) program provides challenging, hands-on, in-depth exploration for those passionate about the subjects of the Science of Sound and Veterinary Science.

The two-day AWE courses will be held at Marian Catholic High School on October 19 and 20, 2013, 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Sound Lab is for students in grades 5 and 6, and Veterinary Science for grades 7 and 8.

“Students with high ability often need and want additional challenges to augment their schoolwork,” says Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait, Principal of Marian Catholic High School. “However, many students are involved in multiple activities which can make it difficult for additional programs to be held after school.  The Accelerated Weekend Experience, conducted by the Center for Talent Development, is an excellent option and we are very pleased to make this opportunity available.”

“Students that attend AWE programs describe the experience as genuinely awesome,” says Jamie Guess of the Center for Talent Development.  “They are able to immerse themselves in a subject of interest. Our instructors are commonly practitioners who work professionally in the subject area they are teaching. Kids participate in real-life activities they would have little exposure to otherwise.”

Sound Lab: (Grades 5 & 6) Music is broadly defined as the organization of sound in space. In this class, students take part in a series of labs that will increase musical knowledge and demonstrate its interdisciplinary nature. Learn how classical composers encrypted secret messages into their music and develop your own musical ciphers. Explore how patterns manifest themselves in dodecaphonic (12-tone) musical compositions and create your own tone rows well various substances transmit sound waves.

Veterinary Science: (Grades 7 & 8) The average doctor does not have patients who chase cars or are plagued by hairballs, but veterinarians do! This introduction to the world of veterinary medicine enables students to explore a career path that many are eager to follow.  Hands-on activities include working with both microscopes and dissection tools as students learn about concepts and engage in activities that practitioners use in this profession. Participants come to understand the commitment required to heal animals of all shapes and sizes, and are thus provided with much insight into this fascinating discipline.

Tuition and fees for each course are $245Students will find specific course information, eligibility guidelines and the online application at www.ctd.northwestern.edu/sep/program/awe
