PSC Celebrates Black History Month


University Park, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Prairie State College (PSC) is celebrating African American culture with events for Black History Month. All events are held on the college’s main campus, 202 S. Halsted St., Chicago Heights and are open to the public.

A showcase of vendors selling African American artifacts, paintings, clothing, dolls, and purses will be held on Monday, Feb. 7 and Tuesday, Feb. 8 from  9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the atrium.

A poetry reading will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 9 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Pioneer Café.

Also on Feb. 9, a panel discussion, “Black Women Speak: The Truth about Our Media, Relationships, and Our Future”, will feature celebrity panelists Tiffany Torrence-Davis, of Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club, and MER-C, Breezy Entertainment’s Hungriest Rapper Reality Show Winner. The event will be held in the Business and Community Education Center auditorium from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Feb. 10, a panel discussion, “Black Men Speak: The Truth about Our Media, Relationships, and Our Future”, will feature guest panelists from the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The event will be held in the Business and Community Education Center auditorium from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

A blood drive in honor of Dr. Charles Drew will be held on Monday, Feb. 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drew, a pioneer in the field of blood plasma, founded the American Red Cross blood bank and the first blood bank in Great Britain.

On Tuesday, Feb. 15, a Black History Trivia Game Show gives contestants an opportunity to learn and have fun at the same time from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m, in the Pioneer Cafe. The winner will receive a cash prize.

The 23 rd annual Jazz Fest featuring Orbert Davis on trumpet, Ed Petersen, on tenor saxophone, Larry Gray on bass, Joel Spence on drums, and Valerie Nicholson on piano will treat audiences to an evening of jazz on Friday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $12; for students and senior citizens, $8.

The Black Student Union PSC Idol Competition will feature the talents of PSC students on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. in the Business and Community Education Center auditorium. The celebrity host is Trey Da Choklit Jok of Power 92.
