Rich East Girls Track Opens Season with Good Meet at Thornwood

South Holland, IL–(ENEWSPF)– The Rich East Girls Track team opened its season Wednesday night with a good performance at the Thornwood Triangular at the Thornwood Field House in South Holland.

On the varsity level, the Rockets’ 880-yard relay team of Jazzmen Allen, Sade Gant, Larya Gordon and Chantay Washington won the event with a time of 2 minutes, 5.619 seconds, just ahead of Rich South’s 2:06.804. Washington (40.391) and Allen (45.209) came back later to win the gold and silver, respectively, in the 300 yard dash. Jazmin Lewis also placed in the 60 yard hurdles and third in both the long jump and triple jump.

"After almost a month of practice on tile floors, stairs and in the weight room, it was great to finally get the girls on a great indoor track to run a meet," said Rich East assistant head coach for girls track and field Kevin Kredens. "Because of the weather, we’ve only been able to get outside on the track twice.

"Our first indoor meet wasn’t supposed to be until feb. 13 at Lockport, but when the girls found out we had another indoor meet, they were so happy. They kept saying coach ‘Coach, we can’t wait ’till we get to a meet!’ And Thornwood has a great indoor track. And we had great competition with our friendly rivals at Rich South and Thornwood."

In the freshman meet, Sha-Kira Cocroft won the 50-yard dash (6.8) and Malika Fort-Bolar won the 60 yard low hurdles (10.929) and the long jump (11-3.5).

"As a coaching staff (with Becky Czmyr and Tom Noble), we’re very proud of the girls," Kredens said. "Many were running in their first-ever high school meet and so they all had a lot to be proud of. We have a lot of work to do, a lot of work. But when this meet was over, we had a lot of smiles. It was a nice start."

The Rockets next indoor meet is at Lockport East High School at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13. Upcoming meets are: at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, back at Thornwood; and at 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, at Bloom Trail High School.
