Roosevelt University’s Israel Vargas honored for Promoting College to Inner City Youths

Israel Vargas

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–April 14, 2016.  Israel Vargas, director of community outreach at Roosevelt University, has been honored as education leader of the year by Minds Matter Chicago, a nonprofit that runs a significant tutoring program for disadvantaged youths.

A mentor to Minds Matter Chicago teens, Vargas is responsible for growing a partnership over the last two years between Roosevelt University and the nonprofit organization.

“I am honored to be recognized for the work we have been doing to prepare teens for college,” said Vargas, who works with about 75 youths and tutoring volunteers, including many from the corporate world, who come to Roosevelt on Saturdays to be a part of Minds Matter Chicago’s unique college preparation program.

“Most of these teens come from low-income households and many don’t have college role models,” said Vargas, who has been helping disadvantaged youths and their families in the Chicago area gain access to education, stay safe from violence and secure low-income housing, jobs and citizenship. He joined Roosevelt in January 2014.

“I applaud Minds Matter Chicago for its efforts in helping youths see that college not only is important for the future, but is also possible for them as an option.”

Vargas was honored by Minds Matter Chicago on April 9 during a gala celebration at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago.
