South Holland, IL-(ENEWSPF)- South Suburban College (SSC) and Career Development System (CDS) hosted the 7th Annual South Suburban College Video Competition on Thursday, April 10, 2014, in the Kindig Performing Arts Center.  The competition showcases talent from area high schools as well as provides local students with a tour of the college’s facilities, featuring the television studio/control room, audio studio/control room, and multimedia lab.

“Each year, the student entries are more polished, more creative, and more exciting, and this year is no exception,” said SSC Communication Professor John Geraci.

Nine local high schools submitted entries to the competition including Bremen, Eisenhower, Hillcrest, Oak Forest, Shepard, T.F. North, Thornridge, Thornton, and Thornwood. Students entered work in eight different categories: Commercial, PSA, Short Subject, Music Video, Creative Editing, News Story or Feature, News Program, and Live Multi-Camera Program. The 66 entries were judged on aesthetic quality, technical quality, program design, and overall effectiveness.

Jodi Pelini (Eisenhower High School TV Production and Broadcast News Teacher) said, “Competitions like the SSC Video Competition are important because students need to understand that the projects they produce must appeal to a wider audience beyond their own school.”

In addition to the student awards, high schools competed among each other for the Regional Award of Distinction.  Dwight D. Eisenhower High School won this award, having the highest average score per entry.

“We do it, not for the awards, but because we want to make our community proud of our students,” said Pelini.  “When the name ‘Eisenhower High School’ was announced this year for the Regional Award of Distinction, we were so thrilled and proud.  The award just validates all the time and effort that the staff and the students put into the program.”
