South Suburban College to Open ‘Speaking Center’ to Benefit Students and Community

SOUTH HOLLAND, IL—(ENEWSPF)—November 8, 2013. South Suburban College (SSC) is hosting an Open House for their new Speaking Center on Wednesday, November 20th in Room 3236 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.  SSC invites all staff, students and community members to visit the new facility and find out more about its purpose and usability.

The Speaking Center was created to assist individuals in each step of the speech process.  “Students are guaranteed to use his or her reading, writing, listening, speaking, and presenting skills each day in any Speech class,” said Bridget Nickel, SSC Speech Instructor.  “As a result of practicing and improving these skills daily, an individual will experience the transformation from being a student to being a valuable member of society—a citizen who can communicate clearly and effectively.”

The mission of the South Suburban Speaking Center is to support students and community members in the on-going process of becoming more confident, competent and effective speakers.  Furthermore, the overall goal is to provide students and community members the opportunity to speak one-on-one with a certified speech instructor who will assist with:

Brainstorming sessions

Choosing a topic

Research assistance

Speech organization

Creating transitions

Delivery practice

Visual aids

PowerPoint training

Self-evaluation videotaping

The Speaking Center is a completely free service to SSC students and community members of College District 510.  Guests may walk-in and work with an instructor if one is available, or schedule an appointment based on the hours posted.
