60 new Chicago Public School graduates to discuss top issues, paths to public service with current electeds

Chicago IL –(ENEWSPF)–August 1, 2017. In an effort to encourage youth to run for office and pursue careers in public service, Mikva Challenge will host two roundtable discussions on Friday, August 4th, at which students will sit down with local, state and federal officials to discuss top issues facing the city, how to improve communication between youth and the electeds who represent them, and ask for some career advice.

Event Details:

Session 1 will be held 11 a.m. to 12 noon

Session 2 will be held 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The event will take place at 222 West Merchandise Mart Plaza, 12th Floor (Suite 1230) in Chicago.

This discussion is a culminating event for the Mikva Challenge Summer Fellows, a program that partners with elected officials across the city of Chicago to place 60+ rising college freshman as interns in their offices.

“The thing that I like the most about my office is my lunch break…because my supervisor and… colleagues… talk about important topics not only in this community, but topics that might be affecting other communities and how we can help and what we think. We give our opinions, and even though ome of us [disagree], we connect in a way and learn” said Isaac Hernandez, intern in State Representative Luis Arroyo’s Office.

The students in this program also participate in weekly workshops to learn more about how different levels of government work, to debrief their experiences in their offices, and to explore topics from organizing to fundraising to lay the groundwork for their own future campaigns – whether electoral or issue-based.
