Slut Walk Chicago to Host Mass March Against Rape Culture on Saturday, August 20

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–August 18, 2016.  Slut Walk Chicago invites Chicagoans to attend an annual mass march and speak out against rape culture, in support of survivors of sexual violence, and in advocacy of freedom of sexual expression and practices by consenting individuals. The event will take place on Saturday, August 20 beginning at noon.
“Part of being anti-rape culture means fighting misogyny wherever we can. The current political climate, considering the cases of Brock Turner and now Austin Wilkerson, has brought a lot of tough conversations around sexual assault to the public’s doorsteps. Most of us can’t be in the courtroom, fighting sexist policies and rulings, but what everyone can do is show up demonstrate and speak their truth against rape culture in a show of collective force,” said Daney Villa, a Slut Walk organizer.
Chicagoans are welcome to show up at “the Bean,” centered in Millennium Park, to demonstrate their survivor-hood and solidarity in the face of a patriarchal society, a repressive police state, anti-reproductive rights legislation, and attacks on sex workers. Steeped in a rich history of political awareness, Slut Walk Chicago has been a tradition of feminist praxis for years. Merchandise and literature will be available for donation.
“This is an event where we take back public space, an event where survivors push back against the slut shaming and victim blaming that society uses against them,” said Red Shulte, Slut Walk organizer. “Over 1,000 people have RSVP’d to say, ‘These are our bodies and this is our city. Slut Walk is where we take a stand against rape culture and state violence.’”
“The Bean” is located at 201 E Randolph St, in Millennium park, Chicago.
