Justice Department Obtains Comprehensive Agreement to Ensure New York City Adult Home Residents with Mental Illness Are Afforded Opportunities to Live in the Community

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–July 23, 2013. The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced today that they, along with plaintiff adult home residents, entered into a comprehensive settlement agreement with the state of New York under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).  The settlement agreement will provide relief to thousands of people with mental illness unnecessarily segregated in 23 adult homes in New York City.  Adult homes are institutional, segregated settings that house large numbers of people with mental illness.
