New Poll: GOP Rhetoric On Abortion Is Hurting The Party With Independent Voters In Swing States

Ahead Of Debate, New NARAL Pro-Choice America Poll Shows The Leading Candidates’ Rhetoric and Records On Abortion Makes Voters In Swing States Less Likely To Support Them

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–September 16, 2015.  A new poll conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner on behalf of NARAL Pro-Choice America of self-identifying independent voters in swing states shows that the positions and statements the leading Republican candidates are taking on abortion are making independent voters in those states less likely to support them.

The poll, released ahead of tonight’s GOP debate, highlights a critical bloc of voters who strongly support abortion rights and reject the anti-choice positions of Republican presidential contenders.

Even a position allowing for exceptions fails to bring anti-choice candidates into alignment with independent voters on the issue of abortion; Donald Trump and Jeb Bush’s anti-choice position of exceptions only in cases of rape, incest and life of the woman is more likely to incite blowback from these voters than to earn support, by a double-digit margin.

“Our message to the GOP is ‘Keep digging,’” said Sasha Bruce, senior vice president of campaigns and strategy at NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Every time one of these candidates opens their mouth about abortion, they only further alienate key voting blocs needed next fall. We know 7 in 10 Americans support abortion rights. Yet the Republican candidates, and their friends on the Hill, seem to be in a race to the bottom to see who can take the most extreme and out-of-touch position. Keep at it, guys. Because we’re going to make you own these positions in the fall.”
