Washington, D.C. —(ENEWSPF)–August 22, 2017.  President Donald Trump owes the American people more direct answers about what his new strategy for Afghanistan includes—and what it hopes to achieve—before sending more young men and women into battle, according to a new column from the Center for American Progress.

Unfortunately, Trump’s way forward focuses almost exclusively on troop levels, committing more American lives without a strategy for achieving U.S. goals, the column says.

“Trump made clear that he views Afghanistan primarily as a military problem that requires a military solution,” said Michael Fuchs, a co-author of the column. “This approach will only ensure that the war continues.”

Before going forward, the president must answer several questions, including what the United States’ long-term goals are, how more troops support a U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, and under what conditions U.S. troops will come home, the column says.
