Center for American Progress’ Arkadi Gerney on the Legacy of Jim Brady

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–August 4, 2014.  Arkadi Gerney, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement after reports of the passing of former White House press secretary and gun-violence survivor and activist, Jim Brady. Gerney heads CAP’s gun-violence-prevention program.

Thirty-three years ago, Jim Brady was grievously injured when a crazed man who should have never had access to a gun shot him in the head while trying to kill President Reagan. Brady and his courageous wife, Sarah, turned that episode into a decades-long crusade for stronger gun laws. The Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act that bears his name has prevented more than 2 million felons, abusers, and seriously mentally ill people from accessing guns—and in doing so, the law has no doubt saved thousands of lives. Through his efforts, Jim Brady inspired millions of Americans and reminded families who lost love ones to gun violence that pain, suffering, and loss can be transformed into action to make our country safer. Jim Brady’s life may have ended but his and Sarah’s life-saving legacy lives on.
