Center for Constitutional Rights Responds to Senate Intelligence Committee’s Vote to Declassify Parts of Report on CIA Torture Program

New York–(ENEWSPF)–April 3, 2014.  In response to the Senate Intelligence Committee’s vote to declassify parts of a report that details and condemns the CIA’s post-9/11 torture program, the Center for Constitutional Rights issued the following statement:

“We are pleased that the Senate Intelligence Committee voted to declassify portions of its report on the CIA torture program.  The White House – and not the CIA– must oversee the declassification process, and eventually must disclose the entire report.  The White House also must ensure that U.S. officials who authorized or carried out the acts of torture described in the report are prosecuted and held accountable for their crimes, and that the individuals who were subjected to these acts of brutality are provided redress. Transparency is not the same as justice.”

The Center for Constitutional Rights is dedicated to advancing and protecting the rights guaranteed by the United States Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Founded in 1966 by attorneys who represented civil rights movements in the South, CCR is a non-profit legal and educational organization committed to the creative use of law as a positive force for social change.
