WASHINGTON, D.C. –(ENEWSPF)—November 2, 2014. Today, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released the final report of its Fifth Assessment Report, a synthesis of three previous IPCC reports. The synthesis report summarizes findings by thousands of scientists from around the world and delineates the extent to which human-caused climate change is gravely endangering the future of people and the planet. According to the report, the world is currently on track for as much as a 7.8° C (14° F) warming by 2100, the consequences of which would be unfathomably devastating. The report emphasizes that in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change we must drastically and swiftly cut down on greenhouse gas emissions caused by fossil fuel extraction, shift to clean and renewable energy systems, and reform our agricultural systems.
Friends of the Earth U.S. President Erich Pica issued the following statement in response to the report:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is clear; we will experience the “irreversible” global impacts of climate disruption unless we fundamentally do more. Internationally, President Obama must reverse his administration’s attempt to undermine a strong climate agreement based on equity and historic responsibility. Domestically, the President’s Clean Power Plan is on path to be a tremendously missed opportunity, while his “all of the above” energy strategy ignores climate science and erodes any moral authority the president has to lead the world. A president that truly understands the existential threat of climate disruption would declare an end to the age of fossil fuels and move the country into a just, clean, decentralized and renewable energy era. Anything else condemns future generations to a disastrous fate.
