House Renewal of Undetectable Firearms Act Fails to Address New Technologies

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–December 3, 2013. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives is poised to vote on a bill to reauthorize the Undetectable Firearms Act for a period of 10 years. Under the House bill, however, it is legal to manufacture plastic guns as long as the weapon contains a piece of metal, even if the metal is removable. In response to the House measure’s glaring loophole, Winnie Stachelberg, Executive Vice President for External Affairs at the Center for American Progress, issued the following statement:

It is crucial that the laws that help us detect guns do not lapse, but the House measure is deeply flawed because it does nothing to address new technologies like 3-D printing that could allow terrorists and other dangerous people to easily make fully functional, undetectable guns. We urge Congress to put public safety ahead of craven politics by enacting comprehensive legislation that both extends the current law and addresses this dangerous loophole.
