NARAL Statement on Reinstatement of the Global Gag Rule

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–January 23, 2017.  Today, just three days into his presidency, President Donald Trump reinstated the global gag rule, which denies family-planning funds for overseas health centers unless they comply with dangerous restrictions. NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue issued the following statement in response:

“It’s telling that one of Trump’s first executive actions combines two of his favorite things: silencing anyone who disagrees with him and repressing women. Just two days after the historic Women’s March and one day after the anniversary of the historic decision in Roe v. Wade, Donald Trump’s misguided priority is to reinstate the global gag rule, a policy that silences health workers at the expense of their patients. With this action, Donald Trump has turned his anti-women rhetoric into policy, and made it more difficult for women and families all over the world to access vital reproductive care. He really is living up to the lowest of expectations.”

The global gag rule is a policy that prohibits the U.S. Agency for International Development from granting family-planning funds to any overseas health center unless it agrees not to use its own, private, non-U.S. funds for abortion services, abortion-related advocacy, or abortion counseling or referrals. The policy effectively blocks funds from organizations that provide family-planning services, as well as other critical health services, to some of the poorest women in the world.
