Planned Parenthood Applauds U.S. Conference of Mayors for Supporting Women’s Health

NEW YORK–(ENEWSPF)–June 19, 2012.  Planned Parenthood commends the U.S. Conference of Mayors for passing a resolution strongly supporting women’s health and reproductive rights.  The resolution passed by the mayors highlights the importance of women’s health and reproductive rights, urges legislators to pursue a positive women’s health agenda and strongly supports continued federal funding for Planned Parenthood health centers to provide preventive health services to nearly three million people a year.

“This vote by the U.S. Conference of Mayors reminds us very clearly that politics should never get in the way of women’s access to basic health services,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.  “Planned Parenthood is thrilled to have the support of the mayors from so many cities where Planned Parenthood health centers provide critical health services to millions of American women.  As the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate, Planned Parenthood knows firsthand the challenges that women face in accessing basic, preventive, and affordable health care.  While opponents of women’s health are focused on attacking that access, our nation’s mayors will be fighting to make sure that their constituents have access to the health care they deserve.”

Led by Mayors Michael Bloomberg of New York, NY; Ed Lee of San Francisco, CA; Mike McGinn of Seattle, WA; Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, CA; Pedro Segarra of Hartford, CT; and Sam Adams of Portland, OR; the U.S. Conference of Mayors passed a resolution at its 80th annual meeting this weekend, affirming the importance of reproductive rights and funding for Planned Parenthood and pledging to fight back against efforts to curb those rights.
