Romney’s $5 Trillion Tax Math Just Doesn’t Add Up

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–October 16, 2012.  Will Mitt Romney continue to hide the truth about his tax plan in tonight’s debate? Over the last two weeks, Romney’s been denying the very existence of the $5 trillion in tax cuts skewed toward millionaires and billionaires that he’s been running on for months. That’s because he doesn’t want to tell voters what independent analysis confirms – Romney would have to raise middle class taxes to pay for his $250,000 tax cuts for multi-millionaires. President Clinton explained the arithmetic in a new OFA video out today.

But the truth is starting to catch up with Romney. Independent fact checkers, economists, and news organizations are making clear that Romney’s tax math just doesn’t add up and that the “studies” he cites to claim it does are a sham.

Here’s a snapshot:

NON-PARTISAN, INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS SHOWS ROMNEY WOULD HAVE TO RAISE MIDDLE CLASS TAXES TO PAY FOR HIS TAX CUTS FOR THE WEALTHY:

VIDEO: “Keeping them honest though – a bipartisan study found the math doesn’t work and other studies which the Romney campaign counters with, well they’re coming under fire tonight as well.”—CNN’s Anderson Cooper

VIDEO: “Yeah, I think the Tax Policy Center study is the definitive study. They’re non-partisan, they’re very good. They say given the numbers that they’ve been provided by the Romney campaign, no, it will not add up.”—Moody’s Chief Economist and Former McCain Economic Adviser Mark Zandi

ROMNEY’S “STUDIES” ARE A SHAM:

VIDEO: “Those are questionable, some of them are blogs, some of them are from the AEI, which is hardly an independent group … One of them is from a guy who is – from a blog from a guy who was a top advisor to George W. Bush. These are hardly nonpartisan studies.”—FOX News Anchor Chris Wallace

Josh Barro: “The Romney campaign sent over a list of the studies, but they are perhaps more accurately described as ‘analyses,’ since four of them are blog posts or op-eds. I’m not hating — I blog for a living — but I don’t generally describe my posts as ‘studies.’ None of the analyses do what Romney’s campaign says: show that his tax plan is sound.”

ANOTHER NON-PARTISAN ANALYSIS SHOWS THE MATH COULD BE WORSE THAN WE THOUGHT:

Bloomberg: “‘There really is no serious dispute that the parameters of their plan can’t be met,’ Shaviro said. ‘It’s like saying you’re going to drive from Boston to Los Angeles in 10 hours without speeding. There’s just no way to make the numbers add up.’”
