SEIU: Right-Wing Engineers Government Shutdown, But Health Law Implementation Moves Forward

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–October 1, 2013.  Extremists in the House continue to grandstand and refuse to pass a Continuing Resolution that doesn’t block implementation of the Affordable Care Act. This political game of chicken has resulted in the first federal government shutdown in 17 years. Following is a statement by SEIU President Mary Kay Henry.

“A government shutdown engineered by extremists in the House to sabotage the Affordable Care Act began a minute after midnight. But at that very same minute, millions more Americans gained access to health care through the law.

“The Affordable Care Act passed three and a half years ago. The Supreme Court upheld it more than a year ago. Millions are already benefiting, from young adults allowed to stay on their parents’ insurance to children with pre-existing conditions who can no longer be denied health coverage. It’s time for right-wing politicians to stop using the law as a political pawn.

“Our immediate thoughts are with the working people who are furloughed and will lose needed income, including the 700 SEIU security officers in the Washington D.C metropolitan region, as well as the millions more who will feel the effects of a shutdown in their lives and their local economies.

“Working people want a Congress that works for them, not lawmakers so intent on stopping 25 million people from getting healthcare that they are willing to shut down the entire government to make an ideological point.”
