SEIU’s Henry on House/Senate Budget Deal

WASHINGTON, DC –(ENEWSPF)–December 12, 2013  After House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan and Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray reach a budget agreement, Mary Kay Henry, President of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), issued the following statement:

“This agreement allows Congress to move on to the important work that has been recently sidelined like accomplishing commonsense immigration reform and dealing with the increased economic inequality in America.

“However, making cuts to Medicare providers down the road is the wrong direction for our country. We cannot balance our budget by reducing access to affordable healthcare. In addition, federal workers should not be singled out for disparate treatment under this agreement. Workers in all sectors of the economy are struggling to make ends meet and when we undermine federal workers’ standard of living, we hurt the economy and the most sensitive workers in the economy, low-wage workers. When other workers catch a cold, low-wage workers catch pneumonia. We are also disappointed that unemployment insurance was not extended in the deal. Millions of job seekers stand to lose benefits just before Christmas.

“Hopefully, next year members from both sides of the aisle will be able to work together to craft a budget agreement that ends the sequester once and for all and invests in America.”
