SEIU’s Mary Kay Henry: Working People Need Cooperation Instead of Sabotage on Medicaid

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–November 22, 2013.

Millions of hardworking Americans are being left in jeopardy when it comes to healthcare. In 25 states, Republican governors and state legislators have blocked the expansion of Medicaid.

SEIU’s nurses and doctors know firsthand what it means when their patients put off needed care or leave health problems without treatment until complications may be life-threatening and financially devastating. Preventive care is not only the soundest choice for our health, but also for our financial well-being.

Extremist Republicans who refused federal Medicaid funds or who are working to reroute funds to defense spending would consign low- and middle-income families to additional financial burdens and worry about healthcare.

In these uncertain economic times, millions of hardworking Americans have lost jobs or homes, find themselves food insecure, and are struggling to make ends meet; denying them access to Medicaid is simply one more nail in the coffin of the American middle class.

It is time for Republicans and Democrats to work together to implement the Affordable Care Act. Misguided extremist Republican attempts to defund, delay and discredit Medicaid expansions across the country leave millions of the most vulnerable Americans, including children and seniors, in jeopardy when it comes to healthcare.
