Sierra Club Joins Prop 2 Coalition in Support of Michigan Working Families

Lansing, Mich.–(ENEWSPF)–September 24, 2012.  Today the Sierra Club joined a broad coalition of groups in support of Proposal 2, an important initiative that will protect and strengthen middle class families in Michigan.  Prop 2, the Protect Working Families Initiative, will be voted on by Michiganders on November 6.

“Prop 2 protects workers’ rights to bargain for better wages and safer workplaces,” said Anne Woiwode, Sierra Club Michigan Chapter Director. “These rights are essential for strengthening and protecting the hardworking, middle class families who are the backbone of Michigan communities.”

Workers serve as the front line of defense against harmful pollution, chemical spills and other accidents that can devastate communities. Union workers are better trained to know about the health and safety risks of dangerous chemicals and have greater protections if they blow the whistle on hazardous practices in the workplace.

“The Sierra Club is a strong supporter of workers’ rights,” said Michael Brune, Sierra Club Executive Director. “Collective bargaining gave us the 8-hour workday, weekends, and healthcare benefits – things that we all rely on but sometimes take for granted.  It’s important that we pull together to build on that progress and give working families the opportunity to provide better lives for their children, and Prop 2 does just that.”
