Sierra Club: U.S. House Passes Polluter Protection Act

Washington, D.C.—(ENEWSPF)—March 6, 2014. Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the “Polluter Protection Act,” H.R. 3826, which seeks to block commonsense public health standards for industrial carbon pollution from dirty power plants.

Power plants are major sources of industrial carbon pollution, responsible for approximately 40 percent of all carbon emissions in the United States. There are currently no restrictions on the amount of carbon pollution power plants are allowed to emit.

Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune issued the following statement in response:

“It is disappointing, though not surprising, that House Republicans have yet again chosen to side with polluters over the health and well-being of their constituents.

“Unrestricted carbon emissions have driven climate disruption and increasingly erratic weather, droughts, and superstorms.  Climate inaction has devastated our health, communities, and local economies. Yet, in their efforts to shill for the same polluters that are fueling the climate crisis, Rep. Whitfield and his colleagues remain stubbornly opposed to basic, common sense solutions for American families.

“In order to protect our children and grandchildren from the worst outcomes of climate disruption, we must act now to stem dangerous carbon pollution and speed the transition to clean energy.”
