Statement by Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune on President Obama’s DNC Address

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–September 6, 2012.

“The conventions are over, the platforms are in place, and the contrast between the candidates could not be more obvious. Tonight, President Obama made clear that he is committed to building on the historic progress he has made fighting for an American clean energy economy that will keep our families healthy, our economy growing, and our nation safe and strong.

The Sierra Club applauds President Obama for saying what needed to be said: climate disruption is not a joke. It is a threat to the future of our children and it demands action now. Over the last four years, the President has not been afraid to take action, implementing landmark vehicle fuel efficiency standards, clean air and water safeguards, and protections from carbon pollution that amount to the most significant actions ever taken by any President to mitigate our climate crisis.

Whether it is reducing our national dependence on oil, putting Americans to work in clean energy jobs, or addressing climate disruption, the goals President Obama laid out tonight are those he has been working toward over the last four years. In the face of relentless attacks from dirty energy billionaires, President Obama has led the way for America to become the global leader in clean energy investment. Wind installations have doubled and solar has grown by a factor of five, putting hundreds of thousands of Americans at work in clean energy jobs. That is progress to be proud of and momentum that can only be seized if President Obama is re-elected.

There is much more work ahead to move from dirty fuels to clean energy. But, for Americans who want clean air and water for their children, an economy that creates new clean energy jobs, and a healthy planet and healthy communities, these conventions have made it clear that there is only one choice this election – President Obama.”
