The Real Romney Resurfaces in the Buckeye State

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–October 10, 2012.  Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement regarding Mitt Romney’s latest threat to defund Planned Parenthood.

“Within 24 hours of his attempt to mislead voters about his agenda, Mitt Romney wasted no time in reinforcing his anti-choice views by attacking funding for Planned Parenthood,” Keenan said. “I’ve seen people hold seats in a movie theater longer than I’ve seen Romney keep a consistent thought. He has proven time and time again that his agenda is dangerous for American women.”

In addition to threatening to defund the nation’s federal family-planning program that provides millions of Americans with access to contraception and cancer screenings, he endorsed a constitutional ban on abortion, a concept similar to a “personhood” measure that Mississippi voters rejected by a wide margin last year and just recently failed to qualify for Colorado’s 2012 ballot. Romney also chose the extreme anti-choice politician Paul Ryan as his running mate. Ryan opposes abortion even in cases of rape or incest.

Keenan said the occupant of the White House wields more power over reproductive rights than any other person. The U.S. Constitution and American tradition give the president a wide variety of means to influence the laws and policies that govern freedom of choice. Depending on who occupies the office, that unique authority can be used either to protect or to take away reproductive rights.

NARAL Pro-Choice America released findings from a survey in key battleground states that shows that a key bloc of women voters is resistant to a candidate with extreme anti-choice views.
