To The Editor: With Governors Like Pennsylvania’s Corbett, 2012 Elections Could Be Very Blue

To The Editor:

I read details about [Pennsylvania] Gov. Corbett’s budget with some dismay.

As the director of a social service agency for the past 35 years and a former classroom teacher for 18 years, I am concerned.

I believe in free enterprise but I get concerned when the governor said, "Pennsylvania may well be on its way to having a real boom in the natural gas industry, like Texas did with the oil industry, and it shouldn’t be hobbled by needless restrictions."

If these restrictions mean that our environment will remain clean, then I believe restrictions are necessary.

The governor also states, "Thee has been much pressure to tax the gas being drawn from the Marcellus Shale. The Marcellus is a resource, a source of potential wealth, the foundation of a new economy. Not just something to tax."

Let the people vote on that.

According to Time Magazine, "Could the governor’s leniency on the gas industry be due to the fact that he has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions from the gas industry over his career?"

The governor’s cuts to higher education are unbelievable.

How many of our young people will have their education stifled due to these cuts? They are our future entrepreneurs.

The governor states, "In welfare, my budget retains the core services to care for our needy."

But he’s cutting funding for the Human Service Development Fund. This means thousands of people in Fayette County will not have services available for them to retain a "good quality of life."

It appears Democrats slept through the 2010 elections, but their eyes are now wide open.

If our new governors continue on their course, I very cautiously predict that 2012 may be a very blue election.
