Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)— The Village of Park Forest has begun its annual hydrant flushing program, a routine maintenance effort aimed at improving water quality and system performance, with work expected to continue through the first week of May.
Flushing began on April 13. It takes place on weekdays starting at 9 a.m., with no work scheduled on weekends. Crews begin at the Village’s water plant and proceed outward. They move north, east, and west to the Village limits. Then, they shift southward to complete the remaining areas. Work should wrap up in early May.
Public Works Director Roderick Ysaguirre said the program plays a critical role in maintaining the integrity of the Village’s water system.
“Hydrant flushing is an essential part of keeping our water system clean and reliable,” Ysaguirre said. “By removing built-up rust, sediment, and minerals from the pipes, we’re able to improve water clarity and ensure hydrants are functioning properly in case of an emergency.”
Hydrant Flushing May Cause Discoloration, Not a Health Risk
During flushing, residents may notice temporary water discoloration due to iron and sediment stirred up in the system. Village officials emphasize that while the water may appear brown or cloudy, it is not a health risk.
“Discolored water can be concerning to see, but it’s a normal part of the process,” Ysaguirre said. “We recommend residents avoid using the water until it runs clear and hold off on doing laundry during flushing in their area.”
If the water discolors laundry, residents should keep items wet. Pick up a free bottle of Red-B-Gone at Village Hall during regular business hours.
To help residents prepare, officials post blue “Hydrant Flushing” throughout neighborhoods. Signs are typically posted on Fridays for work scheduled to begin the following Monday. The Village has also launched an interactive online map. This provides real-time updates on flushing progress and estimated timelines for specific neighborhoods.
Residents with questions can contact the Department of Public Works at 708-503-7702.
Village officials say the biannual flushing program, conducted in both spring and fall, helps ensure safe, high-quality drinking water year-round.
