Legendary Pianist Marc-André Hamelin to Lecture and Perform During Roosevelt University’s Oct. 31 – Nov. 5 PianoFest

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–October 24, 2016. Marc-André Hamelin, one of the world’s most original and technically-brilliant classical pianists, will make two appearances at Roosevelt University in Chicago during the Chicago College of Performing Arts’ (CCPA) annual PianoFest celebration.

This year’s festival, which is being held from Oct. 31 through Nov. 5 in Roosevelt’s Ganz Hall, 430 S. Michigan Ave., will feature a recital by Hamelin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2 and a moderated question-and-answer discussion with the piano virtuoso at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3.

Additional PianoFest performances include: a Piano Showcase recital by Roosevelt students at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 31; a recital by the University of Chicago’s Spektral Quartet, with performances by CCPA faculty members MingHuan Xu,  violin, and Winston Choi and Kuang-Hao Huang, piano,  at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1; CCPA faculty member and pianist Wael Farouk performing Beethoven at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3; Adam Neiman, a Roosevelt piano faculty member, performing works by Chopin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4; and a PianoFest finale featuring Roosevelt’s esteemed piano faculty performing together at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5.

“We are excited that Marc–Andre Hamelin will be a part of this year’s PianoFest. He is not only an incredible musician with an immense repertoire, but he is also one of the biggest superstars in the classical music world today,” said Winston Choi, head of Roosevelt’s piano program and PianoFest organizer.

Held annually at Roosevelt University, this celebration of the piano is an opportunity to see and hear the best of Roosevelt’s piano students and faculty members.

A Canadian-born composer, recording artist and recitalist, Hamelin is the winner of the 1985 Carnegie Hall International Competition for American Music, the recipient of an international  record award given in 2004 in Cannes, France; an Officer of the Order of Canada,  a Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Québec, and a 2008  Juno Award winner for classical album of the year. He has given recitals all over the world and has made a variety of recordings of composers, including Leopold Godowsky’s complete Studies on Chopin’s Etudes, which won a Gramophone Magazine Instrumental Award in 2000.

For the Nov. 2 recital, Hamelin will perform Mozart’s Sonata in D Major, K. 576; Hamelin’s own composition, Pavane Variée; Debussy’s Images, Book 1; and Schubert’s Sonata in B-Flat, D. 960. Advance ticket reservations are required and space is limited.

On Nov. 3, Hamelin will discuss his approach to practice, his education as a pianist and give his career advice during a 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. session entitled “Up Close and Personal with Marc-André Hamelin.
