University Park, IL–(ENEWSPF)–September 22, 2017 – On October 7 at 8 p.m., the stage at Center for Performing Arts at Governors State University will come alive with a shared rhythmic experience for the whole community. Stomping Grounds features over 50 dancers from Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP), Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater, Muntu Dance Theatre of Chicago, and Trinity Irish Dance Ensemble featuring world champion soloists from the Trinity Irish Dance Company. This is the culminating performance of GSU’s Family and Friends Weekend.
This full-throttled production of global percussive dance transports the audience with sights and sounds found around the world, from the vast Serengeti of Africa and the mountain ranges of Andalucía to the highlands of Ireland and contemporary urban settings where these passionate dances coexist alongside our native form of percussive dance–American tap. This production features live drumming (Muntu) and a mix of new works and favorites, including “Johnny,” a work for Johnny Carson’s retirement from The Tonight Show in 1991 (Trinity Irish Dance) and Ravel’s classic Bolero (Ensemble Español).
Stomping Grounds is a two-month, citywide, rhythmic dance festival that spotlights the breadth, talent, and diversity of Chicago’s percussive dance community.
Lane Alexander, Artistic Director of CHRP says, “We’re thrilled to bring Stomping Grounds to Governors State University, especially during the Family and Friend Weekend, because percussive dance is firmly rooted in the idea of family and community, of young people, adults, and elders dancing together as a natural and normal way of celebrating. Even though we each speak a slightly different ’dialect of rhythm,’ we all understand each other and celebrate our unity through rhythmic expression. We look forward to sharing this joyful program with the GSU community!”
Center for Performing Arts thanks our generous partners, funders, and individual contributors including First Midwest Bank, The Chicago Community Trust, and The National Endowment for the Arts.
