President Clinton Delivers Supplies for Relief Efforts in Haiti

Port-au-Prince–(ENEWSPF)–January 19, 2010.  President Clinton, United Nations Special Envoy for Haiti, traveled to Haiti yesterday to deliver food, water, and supplies, and meet with Haitian officials in the aftermath of last week’s earthquake.

At the airport in Port-au-Prince, President Clinton helped unload supplies, which included:

  • 32 Generators
  • 96 gas cans
  • 150 Solar flashlights
  • 4860 bottles of water
  • Food
  • Medical supplies

Home Depot donated the generators, worklights, extension cords, and gas cans. Wal-Mart donated food and water. Additional supplies were purchased with funds raised from the Clinton Foundation Haiti Earthquake Fund, which has already distributed more than $3 million to 12 organizations on the ground.

After meeting with US troops, President Clinton and his UN Deputy Dr. Paul Famer toured the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince, where doctors and volunteers were tending to a large volume of injured people.

“I wish every American could see this,” President Clinton said. “It’s astonishing what the Haitians have been able to accomplish, performing surgeries at night, with lights, with no anesthesia, using vodka to sterilize equipment.”

Before departing for Florida, where he will hold a meeting for Clinton Global Initiative members today to discuss immediate plans for action, President Clinton met with Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellaraive and a group of Haitian ministers and advisers.

In his role as UN Special Envoy for Haiti, President Clinton has continued to monitor the emergency response closely. This weekend, President Obama asked Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush to lead a joint fundraising appeal to ask individuals, corporations, NGOs, and institutions what they can do to help the Haitian people rebuild.
