Acclaimed Author Isabel Allende Recognizes Critical Work of the Center for Reproductive Rights, Planned Parenthood with 2012 Espíritu Awards

Center for Reproductive Rights receives Allende Foundation honor for second consecutive year

NEW YORK–(ENEWSPSF)–October 22, 2012.  In recognition for outstanding and compassionate work to advance women’s reproductive rights, the Isabel Allende Foundation has awarded the Center for Reproductive Rights and Planned Parenthood Federation of America with the 2012 Espíritu Award.

The foundation was established by the world-renowned novelist Isabel Allende in 1996 to pay tribute to her daughter Paula. It supports select nonprofits dedicated to providing women and girls with reproductive self-determination, health care, and education, as well as protection from violence, exploitation, and discrimination.

“Reproductive rights are human rights,” said Allende in a statement today. “They are essential if every woman is to realize her full potential and participate as an equal partner in her family and community. As opponents of reproductive freedom redouble their efforts to deny women control over their own bodies, the work of the Center for Reproductive Rights and Planned Parenthood becomes all the more imperative.”

The Allende Foundation established the Espíritu Awards in 2001 to celebrate, honor and support compassionate action in the foundation’s areas of interest. Recipients are selected each fall by the foundation and its advisors.

“We are deeply honored to have the Allende Foundation’s support in our ongoing battle to advance and protect women’s fundamental human rights across the United States and around the globe,” said Nancy Northup, president and CEO at the Center for Reproductive Rights, which also received the 2011 Espíritu Award and is the first-ever organization to receive the honor twice. “We share a vision of a world in which every woman’s right to determine her own destiny is guaranteed, and a common sense of urgency about the need to hold all governments accountable for ensuring this right can be exercised freely and fulfilled.”

“We are thrilled and honored that the Allende Foundation supports Planned Parenthood’s efforts to provide quality health care to nearly three million patients each year and to women’s health and rights,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “Planned Parenthood is committed to helping women and their families across the country and around the world lead healthy, fulfilling lives, and ensuring they have access to the critical health care services that they need.”
