Democratic Leaders Criticize Republicans’ Reliance on Anti-Abortion Extremists

WASHINGTON, D.C. –(ENEWSPF)–April 7, 2016.   Today, Ranking Member Schakowsky and the Select Panel Democratic Members sent a letter to Chair Marsha Blackburn condemning the Republicans’ continued reliance on false evidence from David Daleiden and their newfound reliance on additional “documentation” from other anti-abortion extremists.

In the letter the members write, “We are increasingly concerned that, rather than following the fact-based standard that you set for this investigation, you are basing your investigation on allegations of anti-abortion extremists…. [T]he anti-abortion group Protest ABQ advertises on their website that it ‘submitted documentation, compiled over 5 years of research, to the panel…’ Yet this information has not been shared with Democratic Members.”

The letter continues, “The activists leading Protest ABQ are associates of Troy Newman, a leader of the anti-abortion movement who orchestrated Operation Rescue’s targeted harassment of Dr. George Tiller in Wichita, Kansas… Following Dr. Tiller’s murder and the closure of his clinic, Operation Rescue dispatched members of their Wichita team to continue their targeted harassment of health care providers in Albuquerque, New Mexico.”

The letter concludes, “The eagerness of Republican officials to follow the lies being peddle by anti-abortion extremists like Troy Newman and David Daleiden has wasted millions of taxpayer dollars and put vital researcher and heath care at risk. Republicans owe it to the American people to prove that this Panel has a legitimate basis or bring this partisan witch hunt to an end.”

The letter was signed by Reps. Jan Schakowsky, Jerry Nadler, Diana DeGette, Jackie Speier, Suzan DelBene, and Bonnie Watson Coleman.
