Public Cautioned Against Taking Potassium Iodide Due to Nuclear Reactor Explosions in Japan

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.–(ENEWSPF)–March 16, 2011.  The damage to nuclear reactors in Japan has raised health and safety concerns for people around the world and in the U.S. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has said, “Given the thousands of miles between the two countries, Hawaii, Alaska, the U.S. Territories and the U.S. West Coast are not expected to experience any harmful levels of radioactivity.” Based on this, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is cautioning residents not to take potassium iodide (KI) at this time as a prevention medication against possible radiation.
