U.S. Conference Of Mayors Calls On Federal Government To Respect State And Local Marijuana Laws

Washington, D.C.-(ENEWSPF)- The United States Conference of Mayors unanimously adopted a resolution Monday that urges the federal government to refrain from interfering in the implementation of state and local marijuana laws, such as those adopted by voters in Colorado and Washington that establish state- and locally-regulated marijuana markets for adults. For more details, see the news release from Marijuana Majority, which led the effort to generate support for the resolution.

Eighteen states and the District of Columbia allow patients with qualifying conditions to use medical marijuana with recommendations from their physicians. Similar legislation was adopted this year in Illinois and New Hampshire, which is awaiting the signatures of their respective governors. In November, voters in Colorado and Washington State approved measures making marijuana legal for adults 21 and older and directing state regulatory bodies to create regulations for businesses to cultivate and sell marijuana to adults.

Statement from Mason Tvert, director of communications for the Marijuana Policy Project:

“We commend the U.S. Conference of Mayors for taking action in defense of state and local efforts to move beyond the failed policy of marijuana prohibition. Our nation’s marijuana policy should reflect the facts about marijuana. If our federal government is unwilling to adopt evidence-based marijuana laws, it is up to states and localities to pick up the slack.

“Voters around the nation are increasingly becoming fed up with laws that deny seriously ill people the right to use medical marijuana and punish adults simply for using a substance that is objectively less harmful than alcohol. It is time to end marijuana prohibition and replace it with a more sensible approach.”
