Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—November 7, 2011. The Village of Park Forest, long known as the original ‘GI Town’ has not forgotten its heritage. Each year around the Veteran’s Holiday, the Village hosts a Military Recognition ceremony. This ceremony serves two distinct purposes. The first is to honor and recognize any local service men or women who are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces and might be in harms way. The ceremony salutes these individuals and also acts as a support mechanism to family members who live every day with the concerns that come with a loved one who is serving abroad in the U.S. Military. The second and equally important purpose of the Military Recognition Event is to offer appreciation for any local Veterans who might be in attendance. The 2011 Military Recognition Event will take place on Monday, November 7 at 6 p.m. in the Board Room of the Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. All residents are encouraged to attend. Park Forest residents who have family currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces are encouraged to call Village Manager Tom Mick at 708-748-1129 so that they can be properly recognized.

December Senior Trip – Sound of Music Show & Lunch at Drury Lane Theatre (Oakbrook Terrace, IL)

On Wednesday, December 14th come see the final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein, one of the world’s most cherished musicals. CenterPoint at GSU will host its semiannual, award-winning Veterans Entrepreneurial Boot Camp on Wednesday, November 15 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Veterans Entrepreneurial Boot Camp is offered at no cost to veterans. Job Search Assistance Every Tuesday At GSU

The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. Today, individuals and families face economic and social pressures as well as communication difficulties that frequently disrupt family unity and the ability to cope. Cook County Commission Holding Low-Cost Rabies Vaccine & Microchip Clinics Through November 9

Cook County Commissioner Joan Patricia Murphy is currently sponsoring clinics that provide low-cost rabies vaccines and microchips for dogs, cats and ferrets. The clinics are for Cook County residents only and will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays through November 9, from 10 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at various locations throughout the County. Vaccines and microchips will be provided for dogs and cats for $7 for a one-year vaccine; $21 for a three-year vaccine; $9 for ferrets one-year vaccine; and $10 for microchip identification. Mobile clinic services will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Pet owners must present a valid Driver’s License or State ID as proof of residency. Seeking Nominations for Park Forest Hall of Fame

Nominations for the Park Forest Hall of Fame are now being accepted from the public through December 30, 2011 by the Park Forest Historical Society. Nominees are selected for consistent, beneficial service to the citizens of Park Forest over a long span of time. The official nomination form must be used and nominations must include the requested information to be accepted. Nomination forms are available at Park Forest Village Hall, the Park Forest Public Library, or the 1950s Park Forest House Museum. The Park Forest Hall of Fame Induction ceremony will be held at Freedom Hall on April 15, 2012.

Free Java Tuesdays

All are invited to Faith United Protestant Church for FREE Java Tuesdays. Visitors are asked to go to the Indianwood Boulevard side entrance between 8:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. for free curbside service or to come and sit a bit. On Saturday, November 12 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Calvary United Protestant Church, women of the South Suburban area are invited to attend W.O.M.E.N. W.O.M.E.N. is open to women of the community to work as a peer spiritual support group of women. It is a time to eat, share and discuss issues that affect the female gender of all ages. South Suburban Family Shelter Used Cell Phone Collection Drive

South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program. Proceeds from the collection fund the critical programs and services provided to families who experience domestic violence. All victim services are provided free of charge and are available in English and Spanish. Cell phone collection sites currently include:

Safe Disposal Program – Bio-waste

The Park Forest Health Department and Environment Commission have partnered to provide information on the proper disposal of bio-waste such as used syringes or lancets (medical sharps). Begin by purchasing a Sharps container to dispose of your medical sharps for $10 at the Park Forest Health Department. Recycle Used Cell Phones and Cell Phone Accessories

The Rotary Club of Park Forest is conducting a used cell phone and accessory collection drive to benefit the families and programs of the South Suburban Family Shelter.
