The Sierra Club Launches Major New Platform for Environmental Activism

AddUp.org to bring together millions of advocates for online social change

San Francisco –(ENEWSPF)–April 2, 2015. The Sierra Club, the nation’s largest grassroots environmental group, announced the launch of AddUp, a one-stop shop for effective environmental activism — at home or on-the-go, online or in communities across the country. Fueled by the Sierra Club’s robust grassroots campaigns, AddUp offers a diverse suite of local, state and national environmental issues for people to take action.

AddUp will regularly provide visitors with personalized campaign recommendations, making it quick and easy to discover and affect change on the issues that matter most to that individual. This personalized recommendation algorithm — similar to those used by companies like Amazon and Netflix — presents people with the opportunities for activism that are most likely to interest them.

“Millions of people want to see our environment protected, but might not know where to start. We’ve invested in building this new tool because we want to show how easy it is to take action, and how individual actions can add up to real, meaningful change,” said Chris Thomas, the Sierra Club’s Chief Innovation Officer. “The Sierra Club created chapters over a hundred years ago to build local change from the ground up, and now we’re creating a similar kind of infrastructure for supporting grassroots environmentalism in the digital age.”

Hundreds of environmental campaigns will be featured on a single, elegantly simple website. AddUp gives users multiple options for engaging with a campaign, both online (petitions, click to Tweet, sharing content with friends) and offline (local events to attend in person). The site also deploys Blue State Digital’s TargetShare product, which enables users to recruit and share content with the right friends in their network based on their interests.

AddUp keeps track of what campaigns users have taken action on, and what and how many actions they’ve taken. By providing real-time updates on the campaigns an individual has supported, AddUp makes it easier than ever to see how  individual actions together with that of millions across the country are literally “adding up” to create real-world impacts to protect our communities and our planet.

“AddUp demonstrates the future of digital advocacy: focusing on smart (not just big) data, personalization, localization, and the power of social connectivity to link supporters and accelerate collective impact,” said Andrew Paryzer, Managing Director of Blue State Digital, the digital agency and technology company that led the strategy, experience design, and platform build for AddUp.
