1,000 community leaders from across the North Side will gather Sunday, May 6, at American Islamic College, 640 West Irving Park Road in Chicago. The Convention, sponsored by community organizing group ONE Northside and titled “Community Power, Community Solutions,” will bring North Side leaders face to face with city, state, and federal legislators to advance solutions on issues like affordable housing, education, economic justice, mental health justice, and police accountability. After the Convention, the 1,000 leaders in attendance will march for community benefits agreements across the North Side.

“The Convention is about celebrating the victories we win when our community works together. We are here from every corner of the North Side,” said Curtis Smith, board president and co-chair of the event. “The wealthiest 1% of our population and large corporations are robbing the people of what we need to thrive. They have hijacked our economy and our government, from the state budget crisis last year to the eviction of tent cities by the Lawrence and Wilson viaducts. ONE Northside believes that we must organize together to create the solutions we want to see in our communities.”

“All of the issues we are working to address are connected to the displacement of our neighbors across the North Side. When developers build luxury developments in our neighborhoods without protection for the community, the people who make our communities powerful are displaced,” said Michael Cuaresma, a member of ONE Northside’s Affordable Housing team working for Community Benefits Agreements across the North Side.

“We’re marching after our Convention because our elected officials have to create and enforce protections against developers who want to profit off our neighborhoods.”

1,000 people from across the North Side of Chicago –including church groups, college students, people living in affordable housing, people experiencing homelessness, and staff and clients of local social service agencies will be in attendance.
