Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–Septemer 13, 2013. Today, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) announced her cosponsorship of the Protecting Immigrants from Legal Exploitation Act. The legislation was introduced by Congressman Bill Foster (IL-11) and Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21). The bill provides penalties for those who mislead immigrants by providing fraudulent services. It also gives immigrants the opportunity to resubmit application materials completed by fraudulent attorneys.
“Immigrants to our country deserve every opportunity to pursue the American Dream,” said Duckworth. “In our complex immigration system it is often difficult for immigrants to understand their rights and this provides opportunities for exploitation. We need to pass this legislation and comprehensive immigration reform to stop these crimes and create a system that is more practical, fair and humane. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to move this bipartisan legislation forward.”
