Roosevelt University’s College of Education Receives $100,000 Grant to Redesign Elementary Education Program

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–October 1, 2013.  During the 2013-14 academic year, Roosevelt University’s College of Education will revise its curriculum to help elementary education students become better classroom teachers and meet new and more rigorous national and state standards in content areas like mathematics, literacy, science and social studies.

Faculty members from Roosevelt’s colleges of Education and Arts and Sciences along with teachers and principals from Chicago elementary schools will be working together during the academic year to develop new courses designed to give future teachers the knowledge and skills they need to be outstanding teachers.  Their work is being underwritten by a $100,000 grant Roosevelt received from Searle Funds at The Chicago Community Trust.

“I want to thank the Searle Funds for supporting our efforts to enhance teacher-education programs,” said Tom Philion, interim dean of the College of Education.   “This cross-college initiative will powerfully impact the learning of students in the Chicago Public Schools and other districts in Cook County.”

Philion said he expects that education students will have earlier and more focused experiences in schools, more preparation for instructing and assessing diverse learners, and higher expectations for content skills and knowledge.  “This program will increase the number of Roosevelt students who are accomplished in an academic discipline as well as trained to teach multi-lingual and multi-cultural student populations,” he said.

As part of the initiative, Roosevelt also will hire an assistant professor with expertise in language development and develop a new organizational structure for all teacher preparation programs on its Chicago and Schaumburg Campuses.

“The redesigned courses will be ready for implementation in the fall 2014 semester,” Philion said. “At that time, the College of Education will be well on its way to transitioning to a new day in teacher education.”
