Allegedly Waving a Gun: Felony Aggravated Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
Police arrested Lashaye S. Harrison, 23, of the 7400 block of S. Euclid Pkwy., Chicago, on August 3 and charged her with felony aggravated unlawful possession of a firearm.
Police responded to an address on Sangamon Street at 9:32 PM to investigate a report of a weapon offense. The complainant alleged that a woman known as “Shay Shay” was at the home waving a gun towards a camera, according to police. When they arrived, police spoke with a woman outside the home in a car who said there were no firearms displayed.
There were three passengers in the car. One of them was Lashaye S. Harrison, according to police.
The responding officer asked permission to search the vehicle, and the driver consented. He asked the occupants which of them was “Shay Shay.” Ms. Harrison told the officer she was. The officer asked if she had a firearm on her person, and she replied that she did not.
Officer Discovers Firearm
Ms. Harrison then allegedly gave the police permission to search her person. She exited the vehicle, and an officer asked her to lift her shirt up just enough to see her waistband. She did so, according to police. However, she began to adjust a pocket in her pants, according to police. An officer then observed a firearm concealed within the front of her waistband, according to police.
Two officers then grabbed Ms. Harrison’s arms, one on her left and the other on her right arm, while a third officer recovered the firearm. The weapon was a black Glock 44, according to police. An officer placed Ms. Harrison into handcuffs and detained her without incident.
The firearm had a total of 10 rounds in the magazine and nothing in the chamber, according to police.
Police Learn of Security Camera Video
Police spoke with someone at the home who watched the live feed from a security camera. This person observed Ms. Harrison allegedly holding a firearm and “waving it around” in a threatening manner, according to police. This person later responded to the Park Forest Police Department and provided the footage to the police.
The arresting officer received the video footage and downloaded it to the Park Forest evidence drive, according to police. This officer contacted the Felony Review Unit of the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. An Assistant State’s Attorney approved a charge of one felony count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, according to police.
About Police Reports
Please note that we repeatedly say “according to police” in these reports and often use “allegedly.” We are not asserting that the police officers arrested and charged committed any offenses. We report on the information contained in the reports that the police furnish to us. As those accused are innocent until proven guilty, the burden is on prosecutors and police to prove all alleged crimes.
eNews Park Forest has consistently published the names and addresses of those arrested and will continue to do so. 5 ILCS 140/2.15 states that the governmental body (for these reports, the Police Department) shall release information on those charged, including their name, age, and address. This information is necessary to ensure the proper identification of those arrested.
Presumption of Innocence
An arrest does not mean that a person is guilty. The law presumes that all those arrested by police are innocent until proven guilty. It is the policy of eNews Park Forest not to remove items from the public record from publication. Suppose you find your name in the police reports. Our policy is that we will only add information relevant to the final disposition of the case at hand, e.g., “Mr. Smith was subsequently acquitted,” “Mr. Smith entered a guilty plea,” or “All charges against Mr. Smith were subsequently dropped.” We will do so upon receiving and verifying proof of such disposition.
We do not strike, “unpublish,” or delete news.
