WASHINGTON, DC–(ENEWSPF)–August 16, 2013. Today, nearly a dozen environmental justice and community activists are set to meet with Obama Administration officials to discuss the critical need for a strong “Startup, Shutdown and Malfunction” (SSM) standard from the EPA. The organizers and activists represent communities in Detroit, Michigan and Birmingham, Alabama that live in the shadow of large power plants and refineries. They will be meeting with representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the White House Council of Environmental Quality (CEQ) to highlight how this dangerous loophole is directly impacting the health and well-being of families in their hometowns.
