In Maine, where I lived for more than 50 years, Japanese beetle season was easy to remember . . . because it coincided each year with tourist season. In other words, when the cars came through the toll booths on July 4 weekend, we knew the Japanese beetles would soon be devouring our roses, grapes and, well, you name it.
This year the good news is that we have a new tool in the fight against the marauders. Azasol, a water-soluble powdered neem product that is effective against the grub phase of the insect, also helps control the adults. Simply spray the neem solution, dissolved in water, on the plants to protect them for the six- to eight-week period when the insects are foraging.
For lawns that have experienced a significant grub problem in the past year, early to mid July is a good time to treat the soil with the Azasol. Soon after the adult females lay their eggs in July, the young larvae will be most susceptible to the neem.
For best results apply the neem in the early morning or late evening to avoid direct sunlight.
