NOAA Scientists, Colleagues Study the Wake Effect of Wind Turbines for Improved Efficiency, Reduced Damage

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–April 26, 2011.  To improve energy production by wind farms, NOAA researchers and colleagues are launching a study this month to make visible the invisible “wakes” produced behind wind turbines. Ripples, waves and other disturbances form in the atmosphere downstream of turbines, similar to the watery wakes behind boats.

“This turbulence can damage turbines downstream, and harm productivity,” said Bob Banta, an atmospheric scientist with NOAA’s Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) in Boulder.
