Registration Now Open for 2013 Science Bowl Teams

Washington–(ENEWSPF)–October 2, 2012.  Today, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced that registration is now open for the 2013 National Science Bowl (NSB). This marks the beginning of the 23rd year of the nation’s largest science competition, which is sponsored by the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Science.  Local middle school and high school students form teams that compete in regional competitions.  The winning teams from the regional competitions then advance to the National Science Bowl competition in Washington, DC next spring.

“Many of America’s future leaders in science and technology are likely to come from the classrooms and gymnasiums of the regional Science Bowl competitions,” said Energy Secretary Chu. “The learning and excellence the competition inspires will keep those students – and this country – competitive in a rapidly-advancing world.”

Designed to encourage students to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields, the National Science Bowl brings together thousands of middle and high school students from across the country to compete on a range of science disciplines in a fast-paced, Jeopardy-style format. More than 200,000 students have participated in the National Science Bowl throughout its 22 year history.

To register for their respective regional competitions in the upcoming Science Bowl, teams should go to the National Science Bowl website at http://science.energy.gov/nsb/. In addition to basic registration information, the website also provides information on how teams can prepare and what they can expect in the upcoming regional events.

Last year, a total of 113 regional competitions took place between January and March 2012. About 9,000 high school students from some 1,850 teams participated in the 69 high school regional events held across 42 states as well as D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. About 5,000 more middle school students from 1,100 teams participated in 44 middle school regional competitions in 32 states and D.C.

In 2013, there will be a new high school regional competition in Alaska, as well as five new middle school regional competitions, including events in Alaska and Puerto Rico. The regional competitions, which generally host 15-65 teams, are sponsored by federal agencies, national laboratories, institutions of education, and non-profit organizations.  Winners of the regional competitions will be awarded all-expenses paid trips to the National Finals in Washington, D.C., scheduled for April 25-29, 2013.

DOE’s Office of Science manages the competition. More information about these events is available on the National Science Bowl website:  http://www.science.energy.gov/nsb/.
