Sierra Club Response on Tapping of Strategic Petroleum Reserves

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–June 23, 2011.  Today the Obama administration announced that it will release 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) in an effort to offset oil supply disruptions in the Middle East.

In response, Michael Brune, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, issued the following statement:

“The administration’s announcement today confirms that our nation’s dangerous addiction to oil makes us dependent on all the wrong people – Big Oil, oil speculators and foreign nations, many of which do not share our values and our belief in democracy.

“Instead of engaging in debates over OPEC, global supply and demand for oil or dangerous offshore drilling, we must end Big Oil’s stranglehold on our economy and move towards true energy independence by establishing strong fuel efficiency standards for our cars and trucks, building smart infrastructure and transportation choices and ending government subsidies for Big Oil.”
